Planning a school trip should be exciting, not stressful. Between risk assessments, parental concerns, and the logistics of taking a group of students off-site, it’s easy for teachers and trip organisers to feel the weight of responsibility before the adventure has even begun.

At Active Learning Centres, the safety of your students isn’t just a promise. It’s our top priority, backed by rigorous training, robust processes, and independent external verification.

Accredited, experienced, and ready to welcome you

When your students arrive at one of our centres, we want you to feel one thing above all else: confidence. Confidence that every member of staff has been trained to the highest standard. Confidence that every activity has been risk-assessed. And confidence that our centres are accredited, licensed, and ready to deliver a safe, unforgettable experience.

The OEAP (Outdoor Education Advisory Panel, who set the guidance for EVC’s to follow) recommends school use providers with the LotC Quality Badge. This means selecting us for your next school trip will be less paperwork and quicker approval from your EVC too.

Here’s what that means for you and your students.

Expert teams you can trust

Our dedicated centre teams are experienced and fully trained, with a strong focus on safeguarding, supervision, and student wellbeing. While your students are climbing, exploring, and building new skills, you can simply enjoy watching them thrive, knowing every detail is taken care of.

Standards that go beyond the basics

Compliance isn’t a box-ticking exercise for us, it’s an ongoing commitment. We internally audit our health and safety practices to ensure our processes are diligent and effective, and we continually benchmark ourselves against the best providers in the outdoor education sector. This means our standards don’t just meet expectations; they’re built to exceed them.

Independently verified excellence

Don’t just take our word for it. Active Learning Centres have been externally audited and hold some of the most respected health and safety accreditations and licences in the outdoor education industry:

LOtC Quality Badge

The only national award assessing both risk management and educational quality across all learning-outside-the-classroom providers. Recognised by the Department for Education and the Welsh Government, it’s a trusted mark of quality for schools nationwide.

AHOEC Gold Standard (Towers & Sealyham only)

The UK’s most comprehensive outdoor learning accreditation, assessing nine areas that cover our entire provision, not just delivery. It’s unique in requiring a thorough self-evaluation with mentor support, followed by a full site visit and practical inspection, so every part of your experience with us has been independently and rigorously assured.

Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) membership

We’re proud to be members of the IOL, the UK’s professional body for outdoor education. Choosing a centre with IOL membership means you’re working with an organisation committed to recognised professional standards, safety, and quality practice, giving you confidence that your outdoor learning experience is in safe, capable hands.

AAIAC Adventuremark

A respected industry safety scheme confirming our arrangements for managing adventure activity risks have been independently inspected and meet recognised standards of good practice.

AALA (Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) licence

We’re licensed by the AALA, the UK government body that regulates providers of certain adventure activities to young people. This means our safety management for activities like climbing, caving, trekking, and watersports has been independently inspected and meets national legal standards, giving you confidence that your adventure is in properly regulated, safe hands.

BAPA (British Activity Provider Association) (Cuffley only)

BAPA’s rigorous inspection process covers its Code of Practice plus the requirements of Adventuremark and the LOtC Quality Badge – three accreditations rolled into one demanding inspection which we are proud to hold.

Together, these accreditations and licences mean every aspect of your school trip, from staff training to activity-specific risk management, has been scrutinised by external experts and regulators, not just assessed internally.

Why accreditations and licensing matter when choosing a school trip provider

For teachers and school trip organisers, choosing a provider isn’t just about the activities on offer, it’s about trust. Independent accreditations like the LOtC Quality Badge and AHOEC Gold Standard, alongside statutory licensing through AALA, give schools a clear, evidence-based way to compare providers and make informed decisions, rather than relying on marketing claims alone.

When a provider holds multiple layers of independent verification, including government-backed licensing for higher-risk activities, it signals a genuine, embedded culture of safety, not a one-off inspection or a single certificate on the wall.

The result? Adventure without the anxiety

The best school trips strike a balance: enough challenge and excitement to create lasting memories, and enough structure and care to keep everyone safe. At Active Learning Centres, that balance is built into everything we do.

The result is simple, your students get all the adventure, and you get complete peace of mind.
