Our three diverse settings allow for a wide range of ecological, geographical, and physical learning contexts. We also use the Skills Builder Essential Skills Framework to tailor activities to learning objectives wherever possible. Schools and our instructors discuss goals beforehand to align residential activities with the needs of particular classes to ensure the students get the most out of their school trip.

Teaching through adventure: connecting outdoor learning to your Curriculum goals

PSHE – Activities at our centres are designed to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and independence. Students are given tasks that push their comfort zones but under guided support. Character is explicitly developed through tasks where students take ownership of roles and decisions.

Physical Education & Health – Our outdoor physical challenges include hiking, high-ropes, coastal walks, all designed to promote fitness, physical coordination, and stamina. Plus, healthy eating and rest are part of our residential ethos.

Geography – The variety of landscapes (woods, coast, mountain) means students can study ecosystems, landforms, coasts, weather, and climate with first-hand experience. Navigation tasks integrate map reading, orientation, and spatial awareness to create a rich, hands-on learning experience.

Science – Outdoor learning brings science to life in many ways, giving students the chance to explore biology through flora, fauna, and habitats, and to study environmental science by observing ecosystems and conservation in action. Physics concepts such as forces, gravity, and materials are experienced first-hand, while Earth science becomes tangible through soil studies, rock formations, and weathering processes. At the heart of these activities are field observation and enquiry-based learning, encouraging students to investigate, question, and truly understand the world around them.

How we deliver these Curriculum goals

We work closely with schools before each visit to identify specific learning objectives. This ensures that every residential is tailored to the needs of the group rather than being a “one-size-fits-all” experience.

Then after activities, our instructors and the visiting teachers lead debrief sessions where students can reflect on what they’ve learned, celebrate successes, and discuss challenges. This process helps them think about their own learning and consolidate key outcomes in a powerful way.

At Active Learning Centres we offer more than just adventure, we make sure every activity is an opportunity to learn, grow, and develop. By aligning closely with the UK curriculum, working with teachers beforehand, and offering varied settings and activities, we deliver trips that are fun and educational.
